The Inspiration
Inspired by Wong Kar-Wai’s movie, In the Mood for Love, the creative direction revolved around a 1960’s vision of Hong Kong. With the Jumbo Floating Restaurant already confirmed as the venue, which dates back to the 70s, the focus shifted to highlighting the hidden historic connections between Hong Kong and L.A.
The Creation
Described as one of Hong Kong's most exclusive parties, In the Mood for LACMA received high-profile press from global publications. With a narrative experience at the core, an elaborate production of performances and installations was carefully curated for A-list attendees. The experience was designed around the story of Scarlett Li, "the most legendary madam of the West Coast, and her disappearance after throwing her biggest soirée to date." From the very beginning of the experience, where guests boarded a traditional sampan to access the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, the plot started to unfold. Deep red dominated the scene, with a wall of roses and satin hands reaching out to welcome guests. In the banquet hall, performers were dotted amongst the crowd and on a pedestal was a smoke-filled boxed confining Scarlet Li. Live performances by the New York brass band Lucky Chops and DJ performances by Bas Bellini and Izy were accompanied by burlesque-style dancers. Setting a new standard for Hong Kong Art Basel parties, In the Mood for LACMA sailed 800 attendees through a unique and flamboyant experience.
